The Center for Mobile Propulsion's battery test bench enables research into individual cells and entire modules for hybrid and pure electric vehicles (HEVs & BEVs) in the form of direct current tests (DC tests) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
Tests at cell level are particularly interesting as they can be carried out independently of the module or pack design or the powertrain and do not require the availability of corresponding prototypes. With suitable DC cell test systems, in addition to quasi open-circuit voltage curves and Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization Tests (HPPC) including capacitance and pulse tests, permanent measurements are also carried out to examine the cyclic service life. The measurements are used for cell characterization and provide the data basis for the parameterization of electrical models. The modeling makes it possible to map the specific behavior of a cell and is therefore suitable for estimating the performance and dimensioning of entire battery systems and the design of thermal systems, among other things. With regard to currents, the measurement system is able to provide high currents of up to 300 A for testing cells with very high capacity, which are becoming increasingly important in the automotive industry, as well as offering very high current accuracy in order to be able to carry out and record measurements on small cells with low capacity appropriately.
